Known as the biggest salt mine from Europe, Slanic Prahova is today one of the most important watering and climatic resorts in Romania, situated at 400 meters altitude.
The Salt Mountain, unique in the entire world, Bride’s Cave, Sheppard’s Cave, Green Lake and Unirea Salt Mine are just a few of the resort’s attractions and for more than 300 years represented an important salt extraction center.
Among the natural treatment factors, we have to mention The Old Salt Mine, which was transformed in a sanatorium at 210 meters deep, for the treatment of pulmonary diseases in a saline air microclimate; here you have the possibility of having hot mineral waters baths in bathtubs, cold baths in the lake, hot mud applications for gynecologic treatments and for electrotherapy. The tourists can benefit of the mineral waters springs with calcium, chlorine, sodium, sulphuret. The lakes: Sheppard’s Lake, Red Lake, Pig’s Lake, Green Lake, with a high concentration of salt are used to treat some rheumatic diseases. The possibilities of accommodation are multiple, from places in the bathing complex, to villas, pensions and lodging in private homes.
Unique in the country and in Europe, the salt mine is formed out of 14 rooms, all of trapezium shape, with an opening of 32 meters at the basis, 10 meters at the ceiling and 45 meters height. The total area of the mine is of 78,000 m2 and the excavated space is of 2, 9 million m3 of salt. The ventilation is made naturally, and the 12 degree C temperature is constant throughout the whole year. The sanatorium arranged here has 50 places and a two weeks’ treatment is sufficient for patients with pulmonary problems. Also, in the salt mine there have been arranged playing grounds, a sports ground, a room with tables for billiards and a bar room.
Tourists can also admire the statues of Decebal and Traian, carved in salt by Iustin Nastase. Other touristic attractions of the area are represented by the Bride’s Lake or the Bride’s Cave, formed in 1914 after a collapse of the salt mine, the swimming pools with salted waters from the Sheppard’s Lake, Crasna Monastery or “Nicolae Iorga” Memorial House.
